Juhayna publishes its second edition of the “Carbon Footprint” report to track the greenhouse gas emissions from its activities

Cairo, xx October 2022: Juhayna Food Industries has issued its second edition of the “Carbon Footprint” report, which presents the greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) resulting from the company’s various operations, ranging from farms and manufacturing to distribution and headquarters. This step comes as a part of its efforts to track and reduce its contributions from greenhouse gas emissions resulted in all its sites, in accordance with Goal No. 12 and 13 of the Sustainable Development Goals, which are responsible consumption and production and climate action.

The report revealed that the largest impact of the company’s carbon footprint for the year 2020 is from the farming sector with 65% of the total emissions, and this included operations across its owned farms and local outsourced farms, followed by manufacturing with 28%. The report indicated that the emissions from distribution centers and headquarters together account for less than 10% of the company’s carbon footprint.

Passant Fouad, External Communication Director at Juhayna, said: “Confronting climate change is common responsibility between every individual in society, that’s why Juhayna pays great attention to achieving sustainable development goals, including Goal No. 13 “Climate Action”. The company is always keen to track the extent to which its activities are connected to achieving these goals, as part of its efforts to improve energy efficiency and reduce resource consumption in our various operations, while adopting renewable sources of energy and shifting to a circular economy.”

Fouad also added that the company was able this year to compare its business’ performance with respect to the base year to assess its progress in that framework, and it was also able to reduce emissions from each ton of its products by 9.3% compared to the base year. She added that Juhayna always strives to preserve the environment and reduce any negative damages by all means and by using the latest technologies, and accordingly, it has set a goal to reduce emissions by 31.8% of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions by 2026.

It is worth mentioning that Juhayna adopts a responsible investment strategy, especially as it is one of the largest producers of dairy and juices in Egypt. In this context, the company recently announced its cooperation with KarmSolar to establish a hybrid power station to produce solar energy in the Abu Minqar area, as part of its efforts to rely on renewable sources of energy in its farms.
