Partnering with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD):
Juhayna and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) entered into a partnership to look at ways of boosting Egypt’s milk production capacity in an environmentally responsible manner.
We collaborated with EBRD to develop an innovative training program to support local farmers in Egypt. The program included generating awareness on how to improve productivity by tackling issues such as the fertility, hygiene, and vaccination of livestock.
The results of the program have been extremely positive with more than half of the participants reporting an increase in their milk volumes by more than 20%, with some even tripling their production of milk.
Keeping up with EBRD partnership, Juhayna launched a new initiative, offering substantive and technical support for the development of 25 small and medium sized farms in the first phase with a total cost of 10M. The project includes the installation of modern efficient cooling systems to achieve a better climate for cows. The payment for these systems will be through facilitated loans, which will be deducted from the value of the weekly supplied milk.
The project aims mainly at increasing cows’ productivity especially during the summer, a period where productivity usually decreases due to high temperature, which affects the production of milk by 30% during that season.
Tetra Pak Partnership
In an effort to promote healthy living and improve public health standards, Juhayna has partnered with Tetra Pak to raise public awareness on the dangers of buying loose milk. The campaign has been successful in significantly reducing the percentage of consumers who opt for loose milk in Egypt to 57%. While the figure has improved over the years, the high percentage is indicative of the need for a continued effort to spread awareness.
